Transformative spaces

CTTI, the public company that integrates all the information technology and telecommunications services of the Generalitat de Catalunya, wanted to redesign the spaces of its central headquarters. From the beginning, we realized that we were neither the only ones nor the first to have this assignment, so we had to make an impact in a different way.

Through a human-centered research process in which we conducted several workshops to learn about the needs of the people, we uncovered the first insight; the way of collaborating was the same whether working remotely or in person. Therefore, there was a need to transform not only the physical elements but also the culture.

This is how our approach changed, as the spaces ceased to be isolated spaces and became integrated as a key piece of the transformation, creating a framework that would guide cultural change. This framework was complemented by a Manifesto, with insights and principles for the conceptualization of these spaces.

As we mentioned at the beginning, we wanted to break with the usual. That is why storytelling during the workshops and communication of insights played a very important role.

Co-creation with the people who inhabit the spaces

It was crucial to involve as many people as possible in the research process; therefore, we combined qualitative research, including in-depth interviews and workshops, with quantitative research by sending a survey to the whole organization. Given our limited time, we needed to ensure that we were capturing the real needs of the people.This is why we organized ideation workshops alongside validation workshops from the very early stages.

To create empathy, we made a video to share the workshop results with the whole organization. Throughout the video, messages were framed with "What if...?” so that people would start imagining new scenarios; new ways of experiencing the spaces

As identified in our research, working spaces meant many different things for people. In this new way of working, we found it crucial to reinforce the message that the redesign of spaces would embrace the new habits and needs of the people in all dimensions.

Creation of a manifesto for space redesign

In addition to the video, a Manifesto was created detailing all the research and from which 4 main mantras were defined to drive the transformation of spaces. These mantras were followed by a series of principles or improvement actions that would guide the conceptualization of spaces.
