Prompt Engineering: 5 ChatGPT Frameworks

Clear Prompts = Clear Results

Make your prompts count.

You wouldn’t open Uber Eats and type “something for dinner,” right? You’d get a random mess: sushi? burger? sad quinoa salad? Same thing happens with ChatGPT. If your prompt’s too vague, don’t expect gold. But if you're clear and specific? You get exactly what you need—fast.

📩 Want the exact prompt frameworks we use? DM on Instagram or Linkedin and we’ll send them over. No fluff, just plug-and-play.

In this post, we’re breaking down five killer frameworks to write prompts that actually work—backed by real use cases from Fail Fast Studio, the creative agency turning ideas into digital experiences in Barcelona. Bonus: there's a surprise tool at the end that’ll save you even more time. Let’s go 👇

RTF (Role, Task, Format) – Straight to the Point

What is it?
RTF is about giving ChatGPT a role, a task, and a format. Simple.

  • Role → Who should GPT pretend to be?
  • Task → What exactly should it do?
  • Format → How do you want the answer?

When to use it:
Perfect for content strategies, scripts, design proposals—anything that needs structure.

Example from Fail Fast Design
❌ Vague Prompt: “Give me a content strategy for a sustainable fashion brand.”
✅ RTF Prompt:
“You’re a content strategist for sustainable fashion brands (Role). Your task is to create a strategy targeting eco-conscious millennials (Task). Deliver it as a monthly plan with content types, distribution channels, and KPIs (Format).”
🔥 Result: You don’t get ideas. You get a focused action plan.

RISEN (Role, Instruction, Steps, Example, Nuance) – Go Deep

What is it?
RISEN adds depth to your prompts by including process, context, and tone.

  • Role
  • Instruction
  • Steps
  • Example
  • Nuance

When to use it:
Ideal for complex campaigns or in-depth analysis.

Example from Fail Fast Design
❌ Vague Prompt: “Give me ad ideas for a fintech brand.”
✅ RISEN Prompt:
“You’re a fintech-focused ad creative (Role). Create a campaign for a startup targeting freelancers (Instruction). Follow these steps: 1) Define key message, 2) Visual concept, 3) Main slogan (Steps). Use N26’s freelancer campaign as a reference (Example). Keep the tone casual and human—no tech jargon (Nuance).”
🔥 Result: A full campaign that actually fits your brand and audience.

PARA (Problem, Action, Result, Alternative) – Structure for Solving

What is it?
PARA helps solve creative or business challenges with clarity.

  • Problem → What’s the issue?
  • Action → What’s the solution?
  • Result → What’s the expected outcome?
  • Alternative → Backup plan if it doesn’t work

When to use it:
Whenever you need actionable, realistic solutions.

Example from Fail Fast Design
❌ Vague Prompt: “How can we improve user retention?”
✅ PARA Prompt:
“Our wellness app is struggling with low retention (Problem). We’ll add personalized notifications to boost daily usage (Action). We expect a 25% increase in 3 months (Result). If that fails, we’ll explore gamification features (Alternative).”
🔥 Result: A plan with structure and a plan B.

SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) – For Real Goals

What is it?
SMART makes sure your goals aren’t just wishful thinking.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

Example from Fail Fast Design
❌ Vague Prompt: “We want more social followers.”
✅ SMART Prompt:
“Our goal is to grow Instagram followers by 20% (Specific, Measurable) in 6 months (Time-bound). It’s realistic with our current team (Achievable) and aligns with our visibility goals for Gen Z (Relevant).”
🔥 Result: A real objective with a real timeline.

IDEA (Identify, Define, Expand, Apply) – Unleash Creativity

What is it?
IDEA gives structure to creativity so your brainstorms don’t spiral into chaos.

  • Identify → What’s the challenge?
  • Define → Set key details
  • Expand → Generate options
  • Apply → Make it real

Example from Fail Fast Design
❌ Vague Prompt: “Give us fresh marketing ideas.”
✅ IDEA Prompt:
“Identify a common struggle for tech startups (Identify). Define how our agency can solve it through UX/UI design (Define). Expand with 3 campaign concepts (Expand). Show how to implement each in a digital strategy (Apply).”
🔥 Result: Campaign ideas that hit where it matters.

Good Prompts = Better Results

Clear context = powerful answers. Stop giving vague instructions and expecting magic. Use the right frameworks, and your AI will become a real creative partner.
